As the world marks 250 years since the founding of the United States, this milestone invites all of us to reflect on the enduring ideals of freedom, equality, and justice—values that continue to spark conversation and inspire people across cultures.
Within this anniversary year, we are delighted to host a special literary event dedicated to Jack London, one of America’s most influential authors. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth, the program highlights London’s timeless voice and the way his stories continue to speak to the struggles, hopes, and human experiences that still resonate today.
The publishing house Otvorena knjiga presents London’s The People of the Abyss, newly released and joining four earlier titles: The Scarlet Plague, The Iron Heel, John Barleycorn, and Martin Eden. Together, these works shed light on the human condition and the pursuit of dignity—creating a powerful bridge between London’s era and our own.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Boban Trifunović, a distinguished literary theorist and writer. Born in Belgrade in 1993, Dr. Trifunović holds a Master’s degree focused on H. P. Lovecraft and a PhD on Emil Cioran. He is the author of the short story collection The Heart of the Doll and the novels The Lambs (translated into English) and Thy Kingdom. His extensive editorial and translation work—including serving as a reviewer for an award‑winning 16‑book series—reflects his deep engagement with literature and its cultural impact.
In his talk on The People of the Abyss and London’s broader work, Dr. Trifunović will explore how themes of freedom, justice, and human resilience continue to echo in our present moment.
This event stands not only as a tribute to a great author, but also as a celebration of the values that unite and inspire us—across borders, generations, and histories.
This program will be in Serbian language.
